Une météorite se désintègre dans le ciel. La lumière bleue est observée depuis l’ancien bassin minier, au sud de la Belgique. Pour Emil Petrescu, un jeune médecin roumain récemment installé dans la région, cet évènement marque une rencontre déterminante. Le soir-même, il est appelé au chevet d’un vieil homme plongé dans le mutisme. Le jeune docteur se doute que le problème de son patient commence au-delà des possibilités de la médecine.

A meteorite disintegrates in the sky. The blue light is observed from the old mining basin, in the south of Belgium. For Emil Petrescu, a young Romanian doctor recently installed in the region, this event marks a decisive meeting. That same evening, he was called to the bedside of an old man plunged into silence. The young doctor suspects that his patient’s problem begins beyond the possibilities of medicine.

“Grâce à une construction spatiotemporelle sophistiquée, Jérémy van der Haegen inscrit son film dans le cinéma de la contempation, à l’instar de l’image-temps deleuzien. D’une part, l’espace, psychologique comme physique, est fragmenté : entre Roumanie et Belgique, entre ciel et Terre, entre for intérieur et paysage désolé. D’autre part, l’action est subordonnée au temps, qui mène la narration : les coupes fluides, le glissement quasiment imperceptible d’une saison à l’autre, le rythme posé, la durée même du film (quelque 40 minutes). Sur cette toile temporelle se dessine la métamorphose d’Emil sous la forme du serment d’Hippocrate. Scandé en arrière-plan au début tel un rappel dogmatique du surmoi en doute, il évolue à la fin vers l’expression de la maturation d’Emil, qui en retient les principes originels d’altruisme et de respect de ses patients.
En suivant le parcours d’apprentissage d’Emil, le spectateur est confronté à ses propres inquiétudes face au néant, mais retrouve, lui aussi, un espoir dans l’acceptation des énigmes de l’univers. Les Hauts Pays propose un moment de cinéma personnel et éloquent, où le non-dit et le ressenti se rejoignent pour donner lieu à une méditation sur la condition humaine.”

"With the help of an elaborate spatio-temporal construction, Jérémy van der Haegen places his film in the genre of contemplative cinema, akin to Deleuze’s Time-Image. On the one hand, we have the fragmentation of space, both psychological and physical — between Romania and Belgium, between Earth and sky, between the inner mind and the desolate outside. On the other hand, the action is subordinate to time and it is the temporal dimension that carries the narrative: the smooth editing, the imperceptible passage from one season to the other, the measured rhythm of the 40-minute film length. The protagonist’s metamorphosis unfurls in this temporal plane between two flashbacks, in which his recitation of the Hippocratic oath plays as a voice-over. At the beginning of the film, the text is uttered with a sermonising tone — the first sign of Emil’s superego in doubt. The same pledge returns at the very end, having evolved into an expression of Emil’s maturity, now singularly focused on the original principles of altruism and respect for his patients.
By following Emil’s journey, the viewer is confronted with their own anxieties regarding the unknown, but regains hope in the acceptance of the enigmas of the universe. High Grounds proposes a personal and eloquent moment of cinema, in which impressions combine with the unsaid to inspire a meditation on the human condition."
